We believe the term Pilates should not be used for any purpose other than referring to the original work and apparatus created by Joe Pilates. Pilates called his method Contrology, with the purpose of “gaining the mastery of your mind over the complete control of your body.”
Observations and studies of nature and movement along with experience as a caretaker during World War I influenced Pilates’ work. He spent his lifetime refining exercise and inventing apparatus in pursuit of health and well being. Joe Pilates taught his physical discipline in his NYC studio from the mid 1920’s until his death in 1967.
In his book RETURN TO LIFE THROUGH CONTROLOGY Joe Pilates asserts that his system of exercises “develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.”
